15,000 tickets remain for Jimbo Fisher debut at Florida State: This is why Bobby Bowden had to go.

The hiring of Jimbo Fisher to replace Bobby Bowden hasn't exactly galvanized Florida State's fan base

There are still 15,000 — 15,000! — tickets remaining for Florida State’s season opener Saturday against Samford.

“Dadgum,” Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher said. “That’s a lot of tickets.”

Dadgum right it is.

And now you know why Bobby Bowden was forced out after last season: Because Florida State fans were bailing out on the program at record pace and taking their ticket money and booster contributions with them.  And, let’s be honest, naming Jimbo Fisher as the head coach hasn’t exactly energized the fan base.

Nothing against Fisher, but he isn’t really a “new” head coach. He’s been in the program as the coach-in-waiting for three years now and, so, his hiring doesn’t bring the newness and excitement that so often galvanizes a fan base. If Bowden had left and the Seminoles had hired Chris Petersen (Boise State), Brian Kelly (then at Cincinnati), Gary Patterson (TCU) or some other ”hot” name out there, FSU fans would certainly be more excited.

And that’s why I believe Fisher must win and win quickly. Florida State fans have suffered through nearly a decade of mediocrity and they are sick and tired of it. Anybody who believes FSU fans are going to be patient with Fisher is dreaming.

He needs to win and he needs to win now or he will become the Seminoles’ version of Ron Zook, who lasted three years at the University of Florida.

When I asked Zook a few months ago what advice he would give to Fisher, he replied: ”He needs to hit the ground running. In this day and age, you better get out of the box quick because there’s not going to be a whole lot of patience.”

Hey, Florida State fans, the Jimbo Fisher era starts in five days.
